Sugar Soul Winter Headbands are Here!!

After many requests for winter headbands, I'm happy to announce that I've made a whole bunch this week! These "urban turbans" have a good stretch to them, comfortably fit sizes 21" to 24" and double as neck cowls. I've used a soft wool and acrylic blended knit in violet, brown, olive, white (with flecks of olive and yellow) and black. You can purchase them online, or in-person at my market stall, for just $20 each! This Saturday, January 21st, I'll be at the Halifax Seaport Market, from 7am-4pm on the main floor against the back wall table T150. Stay warm my friends!

Happy New Year!
Thanks to everyone who came out and showed their love for Sugar Soul hats at my Christmas shows in Calgary and Edmonton. It was a lot of fun to see family, friends and returning customers in both cities! My plan is to be back out west for the spring shows. Stay tuned!
The past couple of weeks, I've been making hats from second hand wool clothing, like Harris tweed blazers, that I clean and take apart. These hats take a bit longer to finish, but I love how they turn out. This pink, red and purple wool hounds tooth cadet used to be a skirt! This last week of summer has been super busy, but crazy fun, here at Sugar Soul.

We started out with a day trip to Briar Island to go whale watching. We saw humpback whales (at one point, four whales were beside the boat at the same time!), dolphins, puffins and other sea birds. It was amazing!

Back in the studio, I was busy cutting and sewing up some of the new fabric I have for fall. I'll have new stock with me tomorrow, Saturday, September 24th, at the Halifax Seaport Market. Please note, Oktoberfest will be in Pavillion 20 tomorrow afternoon, so you can find me in the main market's back hallway at Table 129.

The Beanies are Back!

Hope everyone has had a good week easing their way into the new routines September brings. Getting little ones ready for that exciting first day of school, packing lunches, navigating extra road traffic, getting a classroom ready for the school year or getting yourself to a new learning adventure...the lazy days of summer may be behind us but there is definitely much to be excited about come fall.
Here at Sugar Soul, September means a switch from linens and florals to vintage tweeds, wool suitings and corduroys. I've been busy making cloche in these warmer fabrics as well as new toques from preloved wool sweaters.
You can find these at the Halifax Seaport Market this weekend, September 10th and 11th.

My husband and I were a couple of the lucky 80,000 or so U2 fans that got to see them close out their world tour last weekend in Moncton, NB. It was, of course, amazing! I don't know how they did it, but they even got the rain to stop before the music started. Then I got home and found out U2 took our photo! Well, they took everyone's photo...if you were there, too, try to find yourself in this crowd shot!

It's a gorgeous day here at the Halifax Seaport Market and people are taking advantage of the beautiful weather to come down and shop local. Did you know that you can shop from some food and craft vendors 6 days a week?! Seven days a week when a cruise ship is in harbour on Mondays! As for Sugar Soul Studio hats, I am at the market Saturdays (7am-4pm) and Sundays (8am-4pm). On days like today, I recommend relaxing on the rooftop patio, located on the third floor of the unique Seaport Market Building. Once all of you shopping is finished of course!

I've also just added some new hats to my Etsy online shop, so if you are far from the East coast you can still get your Sugar fix this summer! You will see Sarah, from Belua Designs (yes, your favourite monster maker extraordinaire!), Olga (OlaDesign) and Giulia (Giulia Fatica), who modelled for Sugar Soul during a photo shoot with Linda Patterson (Timeless Edge Photography) back in May. Sugar Soul Studio's New Front Yard

We are in the midst of packing up the house for our big move to Nova Scotia. If you look really closely at the photo, you'll see a red barn that is next to our new home. We're super excited, but moving is always bittersweet. I'll especially miss the Saturday farmers' markets that I've been a part of since 2008. The weekly customer feedback I got at the markets about different hat styles, fabrics and sizes was invaluable and helped me to grow my business.

I may not be there in-person every Saturday, but I hope you'll still think of Sugar Soul Studio for you and your family's hat needs. By July, I'll have my studio set up and will have my online shop fully stocked with some awesome new hats to purchase online. I am also planning to be back in Alberta for the Christmas Butterdome Show and for the Festival of Crafts in Calgary later this fall.

Spring 2011 Update

Are wondering what happened to the 2011 Hat-a-Day Project? It was my first attempt at daily blogging and I made it to Day 95. I decided that it was starting to cut into production time so had to be retired. Fun while it lasted!

I have a photo shoot coming up with Linda Patterson of Timeless Edge Photography. I am super excited to work with her again and can't wait to have my Etsy shop filled with her beautiful shots!
A huge thank you to Marta Gold of the Edmonton Journal for the shout out in her Buy Local article, Friday, April 15th. She muses about the options we have to live a 100-mile fashion "diet". Rather than limiting myself geographically, I'd rather think about the origin of the purchases I make. I feel good about buying items from far-flung designers as long as I know that the artisan, designer, cook, vintner are still directly involved. I feel pretty comfortable that the people whose hands are doing all the creating are enjoying the process and are fairly compensated for their work.

(I'll sneak in my move announcement here...)

Yes, my biggest news for Spring 2011, is that Sugar Soul Studio is leaving fair Edmonton for the coast of Nova Scotia! It is a huge and exciting move for my family. I hope to have my studio back up and running by July, and will have lots of new stock for sale online through Etsy. I'm also planning to be back in Alberta twice a year for craft shows and will keep you posted here on my blog, on Facebook and Twitter. You can also continue to shop in-person at MUD Studio (124th Street and Stony Plain) and at Sabrina Butterfly (112th Ave and 65th Street). I just finished these Dark Denim Lotta Cadets and they look like they should be photographed as a group. They measure from 22 1/4" to 22 3/4" and each feature three unique fabric covered buttons that I've made from remnants. Great hat for the houseboat this summer!

Happy New Year!

I hope your holidays have been filled with the love of family and friends, treats and goodies to nosh, bubbly to sup and time to relax!
I'm looking forward to a busier than ever 2011 and have some big plans for my little hat company. I'm thinking about starting a "hat365" project with a new hat posted each day to my blog that will also be available to buy online. It will keep my online store stocked for those of you in faraway places that can't shop from me at a market or craft show. You'll also get to see my newest designs as soon as they come off of my sewing machine. I can't always promise the best photography, but I will guarantee a gorgeous product that is impeccably made.
